Founded in 1977 as an institutional voice for the professional concerns journalists, BOJA is Botswana¹s oldest media NGO. The organization has been energized since 1983 with the emergence of a vibrant independent press. Membership in BOJA remains open to media workers in both the public and private sectors. In 1998 BOJA was welcomed as a full institutional member of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), being represented at its May 1998 conference in Recife, Brazil.
Over the past decade BOJA has consistently up held the right of all media workers to organize for collective bargaining in accordance with ILO Conventions.
BOJA also has as its affiliate the Botswana Press Club, founded in 1994 and currently being revived by an interim committee headed by Mr. Sechele Sechele, editor of Mmegi newspaper.
